DEALING WITH INCLEMENT WEATHER

Hail

  • Stay inside the vehicle
  • Park the vehicle
    • If you are in an uncovered area, turn your back to the windows or cover yourself with a blanket to protect from potential broken glass
    • Get to covered parking if you can
      • Trees are not covered parking, the hail can break branches and lightning can strike the tree
  • Once the storm has passed, drive slow. Roads can be slippery

Snow

  • Drive slow and smooth
    • Jerky and quick motions can make your vehicle lose traction
  • Give the car in front of you plenty of room
    • Slippery roads are hard to stop on, give yourself enough room to brake
  • Don’t slam on the breaks, pump them
    • Locking the brakes will only make you slide farther
  • Give the snow plows room and do not try to pass them
    • They are there to help you

High Wind

  • Be aware of your surroundings
    • Larger vehicles will be impacted more by high winds and may have a hard time staying in their lane
    • Give them a lot of space
    • Branches/trees/trash can be blown across the road
  • Keep a strong grip on the steering wheel
  • Drive slower
    • Driving slowly gives you more control and more time to react
  • If there is a strong side wind, gently steer in the opposite direction it is pushing your vehicle

Dust Storm

  • Dust storms often occur suddenly with no warning but is best to avoid them if possible
  • Pull your van off the road as far as possible while you still have visibility, park the car and turn off your lights/hazards
    • Vehicles behind you may use your lights as a guide. This can lead them off the road or they can collide with you
  • If you can’t pull off, drive at a speed where you have visibility, turn on your lights and honk the horn occasionally
    • Use painted lines on the road to help guide you
  • Do not stop in the roadway where people drive
  • Stay inside the van with your seatbelt buckled

Extreme High Temperatures

  • Drink plenty of water and wear loose/light clothing
  • Try to get inside with air conditioning
  • Don’t drink from plastic bottles left in the car
  • Beware of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, headache, dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, skiing that is cool and moist, muscle cramps
  • No strenuous activity
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Do NOT leave children or pets in the car
    • Keep pets hydrated
  • Avoid hot and heavy meals
  • Check that tires are inflated properly
  • Park the van in shade if possible
  • Use the sun shade we supply

Extreme Low Temperatures

  • Drink water
  • Eat warm food
  • Cozy up in a sleeping bag
    • Warm up water with the stove, fill up the water bottles and put them in the sleeping bag
  • Only travel if you have to
  • Drive very slow
  • Turn the defrost on if the car is fogging up
  • Scrape all the ice off on the windows, not just little clearings to see
    • Ice may be built up on windshield wipers too
  • Do not use water as your windshield wiper fluid
    • It will freeze. Use de-icer instead
  • Examine tires
    • Air will condense and your tires can be deflated

Heavy Rain

  • Slow down
  • Use the windshield wipers
  • Leave room between you and cars in front of you
  • Turn your lights on to increase visibility
    • Don’t turn your hazards on (confuses approaching cars)
    • Don’t turn on your brights
  • If visibility gets really poor, pull over and stop driving
  • Avoid standing water, it can cause hydroplaning
    • If you start hydroplaning, do not press the gas
  • Let the weather get better if possible
